‘Splendid’ was her nickname and splendid she was. The name came from her own often repeated response: ‘Splendid, splendid!’
Catherine, from Cahirciveen, Co. Kerry, was 40 years old when she entered on 19 March 1942, yet she was to give another 41 years to MMM.
Her apostolate was definitely that of the pen and of writing; computers were unknown when she joined. No one will ever know all the missionary work she did through the Auxiliary Guild and other promotions. Even in her later years when she was mostly confined to bed, MMMs overseas received various cuttings from the newspapers that Sr. Catherine thought would be of interest to them – not to mention clumps of shamrock for St. Patrick’s Day! This was her way of supporting the Irish Sisters far away. She was always very thoughtful.
In her earlier years in MMM she spent some time staffing in the Holy Ghost Missionary College in Kimmage, Dublin, and as a local superior in Clonmel, Bettystown and Rosemount.
Sr. Catherine’s ministry was totally within Ireland. She died and is buried in Drogheda.
