Our foundress, Mother Mary Martin, was a lay missionary before she established the Congregation. Throughout our history, MMM has always had the back-up of a large number of people who supported us in active partnership.
In recent years, the MMM family has been greatly enriched by the commitment of dedicated Associates who feel called to embrace the charism or living Spirit of MMM. Any adult, single or married, male or female, who feels drawn to the spirituality and mission of MMM can become an Associate MMM. We also use the initials AMMM.
MMM Associates can be found all over the world, even in countries where MMM have never been established! When a number of AMMMs are within reasonable reach of one another, they may arrange to meet for prayer and support from time to time. Some are able to arrange supportive visits to some of our missions. Connection online is important too.
There is a formation process for those who feel called to become MMM Associates. A Sister will accompany the person during this time. The length of time depends on the circumstances and individual needs. When the person is ready, he/she undertakes a spiritual Covenant, which may be renewed annually.
There are no financial obligations or benefits for the person seeking to be an Associate or for the Medical Missionaries of Mary. By its nature, the Associate movement is a means of being connected to a spiritual family. Nevertheless, many MMM Associates voluntarily help with our fund-raising activities or assist in other very practical ways!
