Sr. M. Frances was the first widow to enter MMM. Her maiden name was Ellen Costelloe and her husband was John P. Cronin. She was married only a few years before becoming a widow in 1937. She entered MMM on 15 August 1938. She had met Mother Mary at a missionary exhibition in Cork during her midwifery training, and that was it!

Sister Sheila was born Julia Cotter in Cork City in 1934. Called ‘Judy’ at home, she came from a family of three girls and two boys. Her mother died when she was a teenager and her father’s sister looked after the family. She completed her secondary education with the Presentation Sisters in Cork and then did a commercial course.

Sheila worked as a cashier, bookkeeper and medical secretary in various sections of Cork County Council before joining MMM in 1962. After profession she trained in laboratory technology in Ireland and England.

Cecilia Costelloe, from Cork and Dublin, was a well-qualified and experienced nurse when she entered on 3 October 1957. She had been matron in the Carmelite Boys’ College in Terenure, and they much regretted her leaving.

Mary Enda Teresa Costello entered MMM at Clonmel on 8 September 1958. Although she was originally from Kerry, she had lived most of her life in Dublin.  A qualified teacher at the time of her entrance, she gave invaluable service to MMM in the early years following Vatican II, in formation ministry.

Baptised Patricia, Sr. Imelda was from York in England and entered MMM on 3 October 1950. Her gifts lay in the secretarial field, and she worked for many years in Nigeria, mainly in Abakaliki and Lagos. She did Montessori training and taught young children in Lagos.  She is remembered as being warm-hearted and gentle, with a good sense of humour.

Mary Margaret Corcoran was raised in Carraroe, Lanesboro, Co. Longford. She was introduced to MMM by Fr. Kieran Ryan, one of the volunteers who answered Bishop Shanahan’s call to go to Nigeria during the 1930’s. She joined MMM in 1939.  By the time she began her general nurse training at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin in 1941, Sr. Damien was an ‘old hand’ in MMM.

Sister Carmel was born Rita Philomena Cooke in Dublin in 1923, part of a family of eight boys and two girls. She attended her early education with the Holy Faith and Dominican Sisters and trained in bookkeeping and typing. She worked as a secretary for two years before joining MMM in 1943.

After profession she worked in the x-ray department and outpatients in the International Missionary Training Hospital (now Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital) in Drogheda for five years. She began nurse training but discontinued after a time of ill health.

Sr Teresa Connolly MMMSister Teresa Connolly (Aloysius) was born in 1920 in Portlaoise, Co. Laois, Ireland, but grew up in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. Her parents were Bridget (née Kelly) and John Connolly and she was one of a family of six, four girls and two boys. Before joining MMM she worked as a legal secretary in Dublin for two years.

She joined MMM in 1941 when the Congregation was not yet four years old. She had her initial religious formation in Rosemount, Dublin, the only house owned by MMM at that time.

Mary Connolly, from near Bantry, Co. Cork, entered MMM on 15 August 1941. She had been employed as a cheese maker in the creamery in Milford, Co. Cork, when she came in contact with MMM. Following profession, she qualified in domestic science in Sion Hill, Blackrock, Co. Dublin.
