Patrice, baptised Brigid Patricia, was originally from Co. Kerry but was living in Dublin when she entered MMM on 4 April 1956.
She was already a qualified, experienced doctor who had specialised in anaesthetics when she entered MMM. She was flung in at the ‘deep end’ from the start. Mother Mary was quick to see her ability, and for many years Patrice carried the heavy and often difficult responsibility of medical administrator in the IMTH.
Her overseas ministry started in 1965 when she was assigned to St. Luke’s Hospital, Anua, Nigeria, as consultant anaesthetist – with quite a few other duties tagged on! In July 1969, she was assigned to Kenya as medical officer of health in Turkana District until 1984. Her work in that arid region of Kenya may still be remembered, as she was much appreciated there. She was of a very calm and serene disposition.
On returning to Ireland, she was on compassionate leave for one year, after which she served as locum in the Aran Islands for some months.
She attended University College Hospital in England and was at the same time local bursar in Ealing, London. She was already ill when she returned to Ireland in 1988. It was thought she had a chronic condition. However, she died suddenly and unexpectedly after returning from a visit to Knock Shrine with her sister.
She is buried in Drogheda.
