Eileen, known for a while as Sr. Maria Catalina, was from Co. Kerry, though at the time of entering MMM in February 1962 her address was in Maynooth, Co. Kildare.
Eileen was a much-loved person but there were few that did not sincerely thank God when she was eventually called to new life in Christ in December 1998. She had suffered so much, so bravely and for so long that nobody wished to see her illness prolonged.
In her active days, her ministry varied between secretarial and nursing duties, as she was qualified in both. She fulfilled a special role during her time as secretary in the school of nursing in Drogheda and was much loved by both students and staff alike. She also worked in the Apostolic nunciature in Dublin, in Ealing as secretary, and spent a year in Rosemount on the Unison promotion team.
Generous to a fault, always willing and available, she will be well- remembered in Nigeria, in Abakaliki, Obudu, Ogoja, and in Benin. She also spent a short time as Regional bursar in Kenya
However, her health did not allow her to continue overseas, and after she returned to Ireland in 1996 her apostolate was lived out in illness. Cancer had claimed several other members of Eileen’s family.
Sr. Eileen was nursed in Drogheda and admitted to hospice care in Dublin for pain control in the last few weeks of her life. She died in Dublin and is buried in Drogheda.
