Mary Agnes Fay was born in Belfast where she was educated and lived until 1919 when her family moved to Dublin. After secondary school, Mary Agnes undertook a commercial course at Gregg College and then worked at Brown Brothers for seventeen years. She then worked at Dublin Lucan Dairies and at McCairns Motors Ltd.
Mary Agnes entered MMM at the mature age of forty. She brought with her considerable experience and business acumen which she used, following formation, in the laundry accounts department at Drogheda and later in various responsible positions within the congregation.
In 1963, Sr. Eithne went to Ibadan in Nigeria where she was Sister-in-charge for three years. She was then secretary and bursar in Anua for a year. Returning to Ireland in 1967, Sr. Eithne worked in Drogheda, Rosemount and Artane as either local or regional bursar before finally retiring in 1993. During these years in Ireland she attended Milltown Institute for weekly lectures in theology and scripture, and Rathmines College of Commerce, where she earned a diploma in hospital administration.
Eithne loved music and was an active member of Our Lady’s Choral Society, along with her good friend, Sr. Della Strada Breslin. She enjoyed a ‘good read’ and played scrabble nightly until her final year. She maintained close contact with her many nieces and nephews, who loved her dearly and visited her frequently. They said, “Eithne was a warm and lovable person and had a great gift for friendship.” She was also a free spirit, not afraid to speak her mind.
In 1995 Eithne moved to Áras Mhuire, which was difficult for her. However she continued to enjoy life as much as she could. Her Golden Jubilee celebration in 2002 gave her great joy and was shared with many of her family members.
During her last year she gradually grew weaker and she often wondered aloud why the good Lord was taking so long to call her home. When the call finally came she was ready to go. She faced death as she had lived life in a very honest and direct way.
Eithne was called home to God on 21 November 2004 and is buried in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
