Eileen, from Co. Clare, was already a partly qualified nurse when she entered on 6 January 1940. She completed her training at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Dublin, after her profession.
She was assigned to Nigeria in 1946, making history at the time by being the first MMM to travel by air. She was travelling with Mother Mary, who was going on visitation. Sr. Senan was both superior and matron at St. Luke’s Hospital in Anua, Nigeria.
After returning to Ireland in 1949, she worked first in the hospital in Drogheda and then was superior in Clonmel. From 1958 – 59 she did her midwifery training in Drogheda. In 1961 she returned to Nigeria, nursing first in Anua and then in Abakaliki, before returning to Ireland to do paediatric nurse training in Belfast.
She was a strict disciplinarian and lived according to the rule, but she was a kind and competent nurse and expected the students to reach her high standard.
Sr. Senan died and is buried in Drogheda.
