Mairead was born in Killimer, County Clare, and it seems she entered MMM immediately after school. She qualified as the first MMM doctor in Dublin in 1947 and was almost immediately assigned to Nigeria. She is principally associated with Ogoja, where she spent almost twenty years of her missionary life. She also spent five years in Abakaliki, Nigeria. At this time she was known in MMM as Sr. M. Visitation.
Her wide experience in the field of leprosy control led to her becoming one of the pioneers in the Ganta Leprosy Centre in Liberia in 1975. She worked as medical director of the Liberia National Leprosy Control Programme until 1980 and continued on in Ganta until 1989, in spite of several evacuations due to civil war.
Throughout her life, Mairead was an early riser and very dedicated to duty. Above all, she was a woman of prayer. This sustained her in her heavy workload and responsibilities. Even in later years much of her time was given to prayer.
In 1989, aged 68, Sr. Mairead launched into a new career! She became interested in various forms of complementary medicine and after attending some courses took up this new venture with great zeal and enthusiasm. Some of her patients came from quite a distance to be treated. This remained her principal interest until her health and frailty meant that she could no longer practise. In 1998 she became a member of the Áras Mhuire community and she died peacefully on 28 February 2001.
She is buried in Drogheda.
