Ellen Murphy, one of five daughters, was born in Bogherduff, Claremorris, Co. Mayo. Her early education in the local Convent of Mercy school was followed by midwifery training in the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin. Ellen spent several years as a midwife both in Dublin and Galway before entering MMM in 1955.

In MMM, Ellen took the name Sr. Moira. After initial formation, she nursed in Drogheda until her first assignment to Urua Akpan, Nigeria, in 1958. Apart from a break from 1963 until 1966, she stayed in Urua Akpan. Realising her own need to be trained as a general nurse as well as a midwife, Sr. Moira began her general training in the IMTH in 1967. After graduation in 1970, she stayed on in Drogheda. She then had health issues and during her convalescence, Sr. Moira nursed Mother Mary Martin through the years of her final illness.

In 1975 Sr. Moira was assigned to the USA, where she began pastoral work in Alameda, CA. After five years she returned to Winchester, MA, before finally coming back to Ireland in 1981. In Ireland, Sr. Moira worked mostly in Clonsilla, Dublin, in pastoral work, before retiring to the Motherhouse community in 1989. She joined the community of MMMs in Áras Mhuire in July 2000.

Sr. Moira is buried in Drogheda.
