A very quiet, unobtrusive person, Eileen from Armagh, No. Ireland, entered MMM on 25 March1946.

She had been working as a dressmaker but also had secretarial skills and these were much appreciated in the general promotion office and Sweep office in Drogheda.

Quiet though she was, leadership qualities were soon perceived, and she was assistant superior in Drogheda from 1960 to 1966. She was then assigned to Spain as superior of the house, for a new foundation there. Though she spent only three years in Spain, her courteous hospitality helped her make many friends, and she was still in communication with one Spanish family up to the time of her death.

Practically all her years from 1971 were spent at secretarial work for the incumbent cardinal in Ara Coeli, Armagh. In later years, while still working in Ara Coeli, she lived with and cared for her sister, Josie, who was very delicate. Josie died within a few days of Sr. M. Malachy’s own death.

On 11 January 1999 in Drogheda, Malachy was presented with the Papal Award Pro Ecclesiae et Pontifice’for her work at Ara Coeli. She returned to Armagh after this, but within a few days she became ill and was taken to Áras Mhuire, where she died quite unexpectedly but peacefully that same evening: ‘peaceful, charmingly dignified, welcoming all those who came.’

She is buried in Drogheda.
