Joan, from Cashel in Co. Tipperary, entered at Drogheda on 1 August 1950.

After novitiate formation and general nurse and midwifery training, she was assigned to Kitovu in Uganda where she worked for four years. During her time in Uganda, she had a very serious accident.

On her return to Ireland, she nursed one of her sisters who had cancer. She moved to Clonmel in 1962 as matron, also spending periods at her family home, nursing her aged parents.

From 1964 to 1967 she staffed in the IMTH and then requested and was granted one year’s leave of absence (on the advice of her doctor). She was employed during this time as a staff nurse at a nursing home in Oxford, England. While there, she had surgery for removal of one eye because of a cancerous growth. An indult of exclaustration without time limit was granted by the Holy See, at her own request.

Some years later, following her retirement from Oxford because of ill health, she went to live with her sister, Mrs. Nancy Clancy, in the family home. She lived there for five years until her death. Her internment took place in St. Cormac’s cemetery in Cashel.
