It would seem that even though she might have wanted to ‘hide her light under a bushel’, there was no hiding from Mother Mary the many gifts Sarah Kenny of Ballymacward, Co. Galway, had to share with MMM.

She entered in Rosemount on 6 August 1940. Already a well-qualified nurse, she was almost a ‘pillar’ in those early days. She was undoubtedly a right hand to Mother Mary in her varied roles as matron, novice mistress, assistant superior general, etc. Her first years in MMM, however, were spent in nursing Sr. Margaret Mary’s mother, Mrs. Nolan, in Rosemount.

Sr. M. Columbanus spent much of her ministry in Ireland. She did, however, have a short assignment in Naples. From 1960 to 1968 she was regional superior in east Africa. She also spent two years, from 1969 to 1971 in Winchester, MA, USA.

It is good to remember her great sense of humour, which although rarely allowed to surface in front of her novices, showed the great heart under the disciplined exterior. In her later years her true warmth shone through.

Sr. M. Columbanus died and is buried in Drogheda.
