Catherine Bernard, from Kilteely, Co. Limerick, entered on 11 February 1948.
Catherine, known for a while as Sr. M. de Sacramento, was stricken with periods of ill health from shortly after first profession. She had major surgery early on and spent a long time in recuperation in Killybegs, Co Donegal.
In 1958, she was assigned to Uganda as housekeeper and superior and served in that position for four years before having to return to Ireland again in 1962 because of ill health.
From 1964 to 1974 she was well enough to take charge of the shop and reception in the IMTH. She also did some cytology work in the laboratory.
She held the post of novice mistress in Rosemount from 1975 to 77 and in 1978 did the year’s Arc Programme in Rome. She was Sister-in-charge in Ealing, London from 1979 to1983. She then returned to Ireland where she took courses in chiropody and reflexology. She put her new-found skills to good use, working out of Rosemount.
Eventually poor health caught up with her again, and in 1986 she died in St. Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin.
Sr. Catherine is buried in Drogheda.
